5 Steps Toward Achieving Personal Growth

Trying to improve yourself in many different realms of life requires a great deal of patience as well as the ability to overcome obstacles that may stand in your way.  Personal growth and success have been attributed as simply destinations in life, but stand to represent mere processes in the long run.  Growth is indicative of a movement forward in life, not simply an end point, and represents progress.  Change has become the only constant in life, and if we have the right relationship to change, we turn it into growth, which leads to constant opportunities in which to learn and grow.  Throughout the many changes in your life, you need to learn how to balance the different aspects of change: your body cannot grow without your mind growing at a similar base, or vice-versa.  Instead, you need to be able to find a happy medium upon which you can grow in both respects without one side growing too weak.

Understand what is important
It is integral throughout the change/growth process to make sure that you understand what remains important in your life.  Once you section off tangible and intangible objects as necessary to the process, you can truly begin to let go of superfluous items.  Additionally, so many people have resorted to others’ ideas of what it means to be successful that they themselves are unaware of what is truly important to them.  You need to break free of someone else’s beliefs and form your own, rather than change your entire personal boundaries.

Recognize your weaknesses
In order to move on past specific events, you need to recognize your weaknesses in order to achieve your end goals.  It is important to determine how you and other people respond to different situations; this allows you to better accept and understand people’s behaviors that are different from your own.  Additionally, rather than excuse your behavior as related to a specific instance, it is important to recognize what your weakness was in relation and figure out how best to conquer it; only then can you grow from it.

Read
To be able to grow in any type of intellectual realm once you are out of school you need to focus on expanding your knowledge of current events and literature.  By engaging in active reading, whether it be from newspapers, magazines, or classic novels, you will not only improve your vocabulary, but also improve your understanding of current and historical events.  In striving to achieve change amidst personal growth, it becomes imperative to improve your mind at the same time.

Goal-setting
Setting goals is one of the most important parts in establishing change within your life.  During this process, you should not only set long-term goals, but also goals for every week, month, and year.  If you are trying to work towards a certain weight or job promotion, it becomes wise to set a goal for yourself to meet for the end of every week.  Once you establish a routine, you can grow from it and thereby encourage change to occur.

Execute your plans
Once your goals have been firmly set, the most important step is to go out and put them into action.  Only by executing these plans will you be able to go about instituting any form of change.  Once you have reached this point in your life in which your goals are slowly becoming realized, you will be met with a deeper understanding as to the process of personal growth and the change which you yourself can make happen.
