7 Tips to Help You Stick to Accomplishing Your Goals
For the most part, it’s easy to make goals, have aspirations and figure out what you want to accomplish. It’s much harder, however, to make a plan to get to those goals and actually follow through. Many of us want to lose weight, get a promotion, save up for a big purchase but somewhere along the line lose our resolve and get derailed in our path towards where we want to be. It doesn’t have to be like that, however, and you can do quite a bit to keep yourself plugging along and actually accomplishing what you set out to do. Here are a few tips that can help you stick to reaching your goals.
- Make your goals realistic. Your chances of actually doing what you want to do are greatly reduced if you make your goals difficult or impossible to reach. If you want to lose 10 pounds don’t give yourself a month to do it. Make your goals realistic in terms of time and level of accomplishment so you can feel good about actually making progress instead of discouraged because you didn’t meet your expectations.
- Break it down into smaller parts. Instead of tackling your goals as one big thing to do, break them down into smaller components, letting you take them out bit by bit. Getting there won’t seem so daunting when you take it in small portions.
- Give yourself encouragement. Whether you allow yourself rewards or just give yourself a hearty pat on the back, it’s important to be your own biggest fan if you want to stick to a resolution.
- Find a support system. Having others around you that can help encourage you and to whom you’re accountable for actually making progress towards your goal can make a big difference in your willingness to stick to a plan and in your ability to get motivated and stay that way.
- Track your progress. Sometimes when you’re working towards a goal over a long period of time it can seem like you’ve made no progress at all and there’s nothing that kills motivation faster. Keep a journal or chart of how far you’ve come so you can see how much change you’ve really made.
- Make it easy on yourself. You’re not going to lose weight if you keep loads of sweets in the house, nor are you going to save money if you take constant trips to the mall. Give yourself a break by removing temptations and making it easier to stick to goals.
- Focus on the big picture. So you had a few setbacks, that doesn’t mean you’ve lost the war. If you take a few steps backwards in the march towards your goals don’t just let yourself go into a downward spiral. Pick yourself up and start again fresh the next day.
