			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignleft" src="http://positiveselfdevelopment.com/FCimages/womanhappy.jpg" alt="Authentic Happiness" width="134" height="200" />I was looking at my doctor&#8217;s website yesterday and in particular the statistics on what they have treated. Ten per cent of patients are treated for depression.  How many more people are not yet at the stage of clinical depression, but are very unhappy?</p>
<p>Are you happy? If not, what can you do about it. Positive psychology  believes that it has the answer to happiness. Research has shown that 40% of happiness is under your conscious control. The other 60% is due to our circumstances, where you live, the family that you are bought up in and so on.</p>
<p>Happiness has two main components. You can asses yours by asking yourself the following questions:</p>
<ul>
<li>How satisfied are you overall with your life and are you progressing in your life goals? </li>
<li>How often do you feel positive emotions and how often do you feel negative emotions?</li>
</ul>
<p><span id="more-1097"></span>If you are unsatisfied with your life then you are not happy. If you experience more positive than negative emtions, then you are generally a happy person. Authentic happiness is not about being happy all the time &#8211; this is an unreal goal. It&#8217;s more about feeling that life is good and that you feel a sense of well-being.</p>
<p>If you are not happy then how do you go about increasing your levels of happiness?</p>
<p>Positive Psychology says that thee are several activities that you can do to increase happiness. These include:</p>
<ul>
<li>Be grateful for some of the small things in your life such as a cup of coffee in the morning, your morning shower, taking your dog out for a walk .  Pay attention to these experiences, savour them, be thankful that you can enjoy them.</li>
<li>Practise kindness and compassion for other people. Do someone a favour or a kind turn. </li>
<li>Learn how to forgive those who have harmed you.</li>
<li>Create goals for your life  and commit to achieving them.</li>
<li>Maintain a fit and healthy body.</li>
<li>Stop comparing yourself to others and being jealous of what they have. </li>
<li>Learn how to<a title="Stress Management" href="http://positiveselfdevelopment.com/members.html"> manage stress</a></li>

<p><span style="font-size: small;">Do dolphins need self development?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">This week I am in Florida. I met a dolphin called Rascal who let me swim with him. I also fed him some fish which he enjoyed. He seemed very happy with his life and probably needs no self development tips from me! </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">Dolphins lead a simple and natural life untroubled by:</span></p>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">The recession</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">Finding a job</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">Paying the mortgage</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">Taking up a health program</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span id="more-1089"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">Perhaps your life is not that simple and you find that things just get too complicated. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">One way to make life simpler is through the practice of mindfulness. Mindfulness is the art of concentrating on the moment, the now. You can do this through  sport, particularly individual sports  such as mountain climbing, canoeing, skiing, cycling or running.  Participants in these sports talk about being in the &#8216;zone&#8217;. In this state time appears to slow down, there is 100% concentration, where worrying thoughts about the past or future just disappear. There can also be a feeling of euphoria where the self is in perfect harmony with the life force.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">Maybe dolphins feel this zone as they swim through the water.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">Exercise that pushes you to exert yourself can not only be good for your physical health, but it can also help you cope with the mental stresses of life.</span></p>

		<description><![CDATA[Can Mindfulness Meditation Help You be Happy?]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://positiveselfdevelopment.com/members.html"><img class="alignleft" title="Mindfulness Meditation" src="http://positiveselfdevelopment.com/FCimages/happy.jpg" alt="Mindfulness Meditation Makes You Happy" width="302" height="200" /></a>Can mindfulness meditation make you happy?</p>
<p>I have a friend that calls herself spiritual who attends an evangelical Christian church every Sunday. She also does lots of voluntary work in a Christian organization that distributes food to homeless people.</p>
<p>Despite her spiritual practice and her good works, she is not happy.   I also have some Buddhist friends who are miserable.</p>
<p>If you consider yourself to be a spiritual person then ask yourself the following questions:</p>
<ul>
<li>Does your spirituality make you happy?</li>
<li>Do you struggle to make sense of life and how you fit into the larger scheme of things?</li>
<li>Are you content with where you are, or are you reaching for some spiritual or mystical state that always seems just out of reach?</li>
<li>Have you found your purpose in life?</li>
</ul>
<p>If you answered no to any of the above questions, then your spirituality could be, instead or a source of comfort, a cause of conflict in you.</p>
<p>All this has got me think about spirituality and how genuine spirituality should, at the minimum, make you happy. <span id="more-1082"></span>What do I mean by the word spirituality? The best definition that I came across said:</p>
<p>&#8216;Having coherent beliefs about the higher purpose and meaning of the universe; knowing where one fits within the larger scheme; having beliefs about the meaning of life that shape conduct and provide comfort&#8217;</p>
<p>I would add to this definition &#8211; &#8216;and makes you happy, at ease, and with a sense of well-being.&#8217;</p>
<p>What spiritual practice can provide this? Whatever religion you follow or do not follow, mindfulness is a great way to start. Although mindfulness is a component of Buddhism, it is practised today by people of all faiths, or even no faith.</p>
<p>Mindfulness allows you to witness yourself &#8211; your thoughts, feelings, the sights, sounds and other sensory information. In this witnessing state there is a tendency to remain calm and at peace. Mindfulness practitioners report that they feel a sense of stillness and connection to the whole universe.</p>

<p>How do you practice mindfulness?</p>
<p>Here is an extract from my book <a href="http://positiveselfdevelopment.com/members.html">How to Manage Stress</a>:</p>
<p>Mindfulness is a process of paying attention to the ‘now’. So much time is spent remembering the<br />
 past or looking forward to some future event.</p>
<p>One of the easiest ways of practising mindfulness is through walking. If possible do this in the<br />
 countryside or in a park if you live in the city. As you walk pay attention to your breathing. Then<br />
 look at the sky or the trees that you pass. Notice any physical sensations &#8211; the wind on your face,<br />
 the temperature, the intensity of the colours that you see.</p>
<p>The idea of this is to pull yourself away from the internal dialogue &#8211; the constant chatter of the mind<br />
 that mulls over events in your life, passes judgements on those around you, creates expectations<br />
 of future events. The internal dialogue stops you noticing what is going on around you. You are<br />
 not trying to stop the dialogue by force of will but by simply and gently taking your attention away<br />
 from it.</p>
<p>The benefits of Mindfulness are explained by Andrew Weiss in his book Beginning Mindfulness<br />
 are:<br />
 ‘Mindfulness allows us to experience the delight of touching life deeply and authentically. It gives<br />
 us a way through suffering to joy. It encourages us to do all of this at every moment in our daily<br />
 lives.’</p>
<p>Mindfulness also means becoming a witness of our own lives. If you are feeling stressful or<br />
 anxious, step back and observe the stress or anxiety as if it was a program that you are watching<br />
 on television. By becoming the observer or the witness, you will find that the stress and anxiety will<br />
 start to diminish. It may also help to then place your attention on your breathing to make sure that<br />
 your are breathing deeply and at a slow place.</p>
<p>Now is the only time that is important. How often do we find ourselves worrying about the future?<br />
 Anxiety about the future takes up a significant portion of our thoughts. Worrying about the future<br />
 doesn’t help in any way. If you always live in the past or future you will never be able to relax. To<br />
 be in a state of relaxation means living in the present moment.</p>

<p>Years ago I  lived in London at at time when I did not have much self esteem. This meant that I was shy when meeting girls and consequently spent several years longing for, but not having a girlfriend.</p>
<p>I had in my mind the perfect girlfriend &#8211; tall, big breasted, highly intelligent, laughing, smiling, the life and soul of any party. I could not figure out why I could not find someone like that.</p>
<p>Now I am a lot wiser and have a beautiful partner who I am engaged to whom I have known for about a year and a half. She would never had looked at me if she met me when I lived in London. I did not possess the qualities then that she was looking for in a man.</p>
<p>Are you looking for your perfect partner? How do you go about finding him or her?</p>
<p><span id="more-1074"></span>I now realise that where I went wrong was focusing on how my perfect partner would look and how what her personality would be like. This is the wrong place to start. Start by looking at yourself. If you want to attract a partner who is confident, outgoing and good looking, then you need to develop these qualities in yourself.</p>
<p>Start with developing confidence. If you lack confidence, then this will show up in your body language, and unconsciously a person who you view as a possible partner will sense this. If they are confident themselves then they will probably reject you. If they too have low self esteem then there is the danger that they can see you as a means of boosting their own self esteem. This is what often motivates the bully or person who is violent to their partner. Confident people do not feel the need to express themselves through violence.</p>

<p>The smart goals formula is a great way of helping you achieve success.</p>
<p>I once went with two friends to see a motivational speaker who told us to make a goals about how much money we wanted in earn in the next year.</p>
<p>In the car on my way home from the talk one of my friends asked us to say how much money we wanted to earn. He said £500,000, my other friend said £250,000 &#8211; and I laughed thinking that the whole exercise was just picking a figure out of thin air. I had no idea how much money I would earn during the year.</p>
<p>After 12 months I found out that neither of my friends had earned anything like the figure they had quoted. I did not earn much money in that year.</p>
<p>So, what stopped me and my friends earning a lot of money? Where had they gone wrong? What is stopping you earning your desired amount of money?</p>
<p><span id="more-1066"></span>The answer is to have SMART goals. SMART goals are:</p>

<li><strong>S</strong>pecific &#8211; Exactly what is it you want?</li>
<li><strong>M</strong>easureable &#8211; How do you measure how near you are to the completion of your goal?</li>
<li><strong>A</strong>ctionable &#8211; What actions do you need to take to achieve your goal?</li>
<li><strong>R</strong>ealistic &#8211; How realistic is your goal?</li>
<li><strong>T</strong>ime &#8211; How long will your goal take?</li>
</ul>
<p>How do you apply the SMART goal principle to making money?</p>
<p><strong>Specific</strong></p>
<p>You must state how much money that you need. Statements like:</p>
<ul>
<li>Enough to buy a good car.</li>
<li>Enough to retire on</li>
<li>More that I have now</li>
</ul>
<p>are too vague. My friends&#8217; statement were very specific &#8211; £250,000 and $500,000.</p>
<p><strong>Measurable</strong></p>
<p>This is easy in the case of money. If your goal is £50,000 then when you reach £25,00 you are obviously half way there.</p>
<p><strong>Actionable</strong></p>
<p>This is the one which my friends failed to grasp. You cannot just attract money by visualizing it. People influenced by the law of attraction often make the mistake of thinking that visualization alone can produce results. Visualization can only be a <strong><em>part</em></strong> of the process.</p>
<p>You need to have an action plan. If I want to get from town A to town B I need a route from where I am now to town B. Similarly for money to arrive in your bank account you need a plan of how it gets there. This could include such things as:</p>
<ul>
<li>Taking a course to learn new skills which will get you a better job</li>
<li>Setting up your own business</li>
<li>Investing in property</li>
<li>Taking out a savings plan</li>
<li>Investing in the stock market</li>
</ul>
<p>Whatever way you choose to make money you need to at least write down the first 3 actions that you need to take. For example these could be:</p>
<ul>
<li>1. Research courses  2. Enroll in class 3. Attend first flass</li>
<li>1. Research business types 2.Work out how much capital is needed to start  your business 3. Research products or services you want to sell</li>
<li>1.Research savings plans that give the best interest rate 2. Work out how much you can afford to invest 3. work out how long you need to keep the savings plan for you to reach your financial goal</li>
<li>1. Research the property market in your area 2. Check on property auction sites 3. Look at best way to raise money need to buy property</li>
</ul>
<p>Then start the first step!</p>
<p>Once the first 3 steps are clear then mapping out all the other steps needed to reach your goal will become clear.</p>
<p><strong>Realistic</strong></p>
<p>My friend&#8217;s goal to make £500,000 in a year was perhaps not realistic, especially as he had no real idea of the action steps needed to achieve this goal. If had set the goal to achieve £500,000 in  say, 5 years, and hen worked on the actions needed,  then this was probably more realistic.</p>
<p>Create a specific goal, create the action steps needed to achieve the goal &#8211; and then you will have an idea if the goal is realistic. If the goal is not realistic then you may need to modify it.</p>
<p><strong>Time</strong></p>
<p>How long will it take to reach your financial target?  I&#8217;ve already said that my friend&#8217;s time scale was too short. Make sure that the time needed to reach your goal is realistic.</p>
<p>Using the SMART goal formula is a great way to help you achieve your goals. Apply the formula to your finances and there will be a great chance of success.</p>

<p>Are you willing to take the paleo diet challenge?</p>
<p>Do any of the following statements apply to you?</p>
<ul>
<li>You feel heavy</li>
<li>You feel sluggish</li>
<li>You have problems sleeping at night</li>
<li>You find it difficult to get out of bed in the morning</li>
<li>You are gaseous</li>
<li>You often feel bloated</li>
<li>You feel tired all day</li>
</ul>
<p>If  more than one of the above statements applies to you then the reason that you are suffering could be as simple as your diet. Change your diet and your health could dramatically improve.</p>
<p><span id="more-1051"></span>I recently wrote about my experience with the stone age diet &#8211; also known as the paleo diet or caveman diet. I have been asked to explain how to get started on this diet.</p>
<p>I first heard about this diet when I attended a lecture by a doctor who talked about the most common health issues we face today. One of his concerns was the amount of people who were overweight and what that is costing the United Kingdom National Health Service through  treating illnesses associated with obesity. He recommended that we should all be eating the stone age or paleo diet. His advice seemed to contradict what I thought was a healthy diet &#8211; mainly vegetarian, with lots of grains and cereals.</p>
<p>Afterwards I challenged him on his ideas. He replied:</p>
<p>&#8220;Don&#8217;t take my word for this. Try an experiment. Try out the diet on yourself for a few weeks and observe how you feel.&#8221;</p>
<p>This was a challenge that I decided to take. I tried the paleo diet. The result? I lost some weight, but more importantly I felt more energetic with a renewed vitality and zest for life.</p>
<p>So this is my challenge to you. See if the paleo diet works for you.</p>
<p>The theory behind this diet is that stone age man or caveman ate mainly what he could hunt. He supplemented this animal protein with fruits and berries that he could gather. Later in human evolution man cultivated grains which meant that the balance of his diet changed. And this is still the average diet today. High in grains and carbohydrates, with some protein from animals of fish. Some people, like the doctor I met, claim that the human body evolved to eat the paleo diet which is the most natural way to eat.</p>
<p>Here are the details of how you can adapt this diet. The principles are simple.</p>
<p><strong>Foods to avoid.</strong></p>
<p>Severely restrict your intake of the following foods:</p>
<ul>
<li>Grains- including bread, pasta, noodles </li>
<li>Beans</li>
<li>Potatoes</li>
<li> Dairy products</li>
<li>Sugar</li>
<li>Salt</li>
<li>Processed foods</li>
</ul>
<p class="article_text"><strong>Eat plenty of the following:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Meat and chicken(Preferably free range and grain fed)</li>
<li>Fish</li>
<li>Eggs</li>
<li>Fruit</li>
<li>Vegetables &#8211; but not potatoes or sweet potatoes.</li>
<li>Nuts, but  do not eat peanuts (a bean) or cashews (a family of their own)</li>
<li>Berries- strawberries, blueberries, raspberries etc</li>
</ul>
<p>There is no calorie counting required. Eat until you no longer feel hungry.</p>
<p>It also helps to exercise regularly &#8211; at least half an hour&#8217;s brisk walk every day.</p>
<p>This diet goes against conventional wisdom about healthy eating &#8211; especially the restriction on bread, pasta and potatoes which to many are an essential part of the diet.</p>
<p>Rather than take my word for it, take the challenge. Try the paleo diet for yourself and see how much your health benefits.</p>

<p>You may find that changing to the paleo diet is difficult for you. You may habitually eat sugary or processed foods. You may feel that you cannot do without bread or pasta.  You may overeat or you may associate eating with certain activities such as watching television or when stressed. <p>Is there a perfect weight loss system?</p>
<p>At the start of the year I looked at myself in the bathroom mirror and did not like what I saw. I stepped on the Wii Fit board. The little Wii Fit man told me that I was obese. I felt insulted!</p>
<p>I decided that I would do something about this so I promised to myself that I would:</p>
<ul>
<li>Eat less</li>
<li>Exercise more</li>
<li>Research the best way to do this</li>
</ul>
<p>At first I decided to stick to a vegetarian diet, have muesli for breakfast, a light lunch and a medium size dinner. I also got a dog and took him out for a walk each morning. &nbsp; I did lose some weight using this system, but is this the perfect weight loss system for me and for you?</p>

<p>One day someone mentioned something called the stone-age diet to me. This diet developed out of research into what stone age men and women ate, which was basically meat that they had hunted, supplemented by a fruit that they could gather. This meant that their diet mainly consisted of meat based protein.The researchers said that this diet is what human body evolved to eat. Later on in human history, man learnt how to cultivate crops and then the balance of the diet changed. Instead of being around 90% protein, carbohydrates were added to the diet. The researchers concluded that the optimum diet for you is similar to the stone age diet and they recommend that your diet consist of about 75% protein to 25% carbohydrate. This is very different from the average western diet.</p>
<p>As an experiment I decided to try this diet out &#8211; introducing fish into my diet as my main source of protein and drastically cutting back on carbohydrates and grains. Though meat is recommended on the diet, as a long time vegetarian, I have not yet introduced meat into my diet. I am considering doing this.</p>
<p>The result? I am continuing to lose weight at about the same, rate as before, so no dramatic change there. What has changed is that my vitality has increased. I have more energy and zest for life. I also used to suffer from many of the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome &#8211; gaseous, feeling bloated. These symptoms have gone!</p>
<p>Is this the perfect weight loss system? Whilst this stone age diet does help you lose weight, the main benefit as I see it is how it contributes to my general well-being. the foundation of self development is good health. So, what started out as an experiment in the perfect weight loss system resulted me feeling fantastic both physically and mentally!</p>
<p>Without your general health and fitness, it is difficult to put into practice all the success tools that self development provides.</p>
<p>If you are concerned about your weight it helps to examine your attitude to food. Why do you eat too much? Why do you eat the wrong foods. Before you start dieting&nbsp; you need t examine your belief system around food. <p>Positive Self Development Has a New Direction</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been busy this week re-designing the Positive Self Development site.</p>
<p>This follows an in depth study that looked at the mission of Positive Self Development and which direction the project should go.</p>
<p>The Positive Self Development project was started in October 2008 and originally looked at the field of Positive Psychology. Since then it has widened in scope to include all aspects of Self Development.</p>
<p>I am now focusing on the 6 major categories that anyone who wants a happy and successful life needs to concentrate on.</p>
<p><span id="more-1030"></span>These are:</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Emotional Well-Being</strong> &#8211; The tools and techniques you need to psychologically grow and live in a healthy manner. Emotional well-being is the art of being happy. To achieve this you need to know how to deal with the feelings that prevent you from being happy. These include stress, anxiety, low self esteem and lack of confidence.</li>
<li><strong>Healthy Lifestyle</strong> &#8211; The information you need for optimum health. This includes nutrition, exercise, illness prevention and natural health tips.</li>
<li><strong>Relationships</strong> &#8211; You are a social animal and need to relate harmoniously to your partner, your family and the society in which you live.</li>
<li><strong>Spirituality</strong> &#8211; How you are connected to something greater than yourself. </li>
<li><strong>Success Skills</strong> &#8211; The skills which you need to make your life a success. These include time management, organizing you life, goal setting and how you lead or interact with team members.</li>
<li><strong>Wealth</strong> &#8211; The art of abundant living. This includes your personal finances, developing a business,  your career and how to share your wealth.</li>
</ol>

<p>Alternately you can explore the articles using the category section on the right hand side of the page. There you will find a drop down menu with all the categories and subcategories. The numbers in brackets tells you how many articles are in each category.</p>

<p>Do you worry too much?</p>
<p>I was bought up in a house called &#8216;Wywurri&#8221;. I&#8217;m not sure where the name came from &#8211; it could have been named after a group of granite rocks in the Maryamma distriuct of Australia also know as Wywurri.</p>
<p>If I ever get around to writing my autobiography it will be called Wywurri, as this is a principle by which I lead my life. Why worry?</p>
<p>I used to worry about a lot of things:</p>
<ul>
<li>My bank account which was never full enough.</li>
<li>My relationships which always on the brink of ending</li>
<li>My job which was never quite right for me</li>
<li>My body which was never light enough</li>
</ul>
<p>Do you dwell on your problems. There is productive worry and unproductive worry.</p>
<p><span id="more-890"></span>Productive worry is when you create a to do list or action plan to deal with your problems.  Unproductive worry is when you just worry but without taking any actions to deal with your issues. What you need to do is accept your difficulties and then move forward to solve the challenges that you face.</p>
<p>One of the biggest problems facing you today is financial. In recent months many people have lost their jobs. Others have seen their savings wiped out through the stock market collapsing.</p>
<p>Robert Leahy, of the American Institute of Cognitive Therapy in New York said, after he suffered a financial loss due to  the collapse of the bank Lehman brothers:</p>
<p>“If you lost 30 percent (of your money), you still have 70 percent,” he said. “Ask yourself, ‘What can I do even if I lost money? Will this really affect what I do today and tomorrow?’ ”</p>
<p>Recalling that he slept on a mattress on a floor when he was a graduate student, he challenges you  to ask yourself  if life was so  terrible when you had less. Consider what you did before you had money.</p>
<p>“Use positive psychology to put money in its place,” he said. “How can financial loss put materialism in its place? How can you use this to clarify values?”</p>

<p>How do you cure loneliness and build self esteem?</p>
<p>The only time in my life that I felt really lonely was when I first moved to London at the age of 20. I lived alone in a small bedsit and although I met people at work, I spent most nights on my own and did not have friends because I was very shy and found it difficult to communicate with strangers.  I felt disconnected.</p>
<p>Loneliness is all about disconnection.</p>
<ul>
<li>Disconnection from the community</li>
<li>Disconnection from yourself</li>
<li>Disconnection from your core identity<span id="more-883"></span></li>
</ul>
<p>Loneliness arises from a poor self-perception and a lack of self-valuation. If you don&#8217;t like yourself then you are less likely to try to join a group of people because of a fear of rejection.</p>
<p>Is there a cure for loneliness? For me there was no one cure. As the years went by I gradually became more self-confident and started building my self-esteem and confidence. I now feel very connected to my self and others around me.</p>
<p>I cannot remember the last time that I felt lonely &#8211; even when living on my own.</p>

<li><strong>Realise that you are responsible for your own happiness</strong>. Feeling frustrated or bitter is a choice.</li>
<li><strong>Reward your successes &#8211; no mater how small.</strong> In your job search there will be some successes. You will get offered some interviews. You may be shortlisted for a job. You may be told that there are no jobs vacancies at a company but you will be considered when one comes up. Although these success do not lead to a job, it is still important to celebrate them and reward yourself with a drink, an outing, a dinner with a loved one. </li>
<li><strong>Form a job search group </strong>- If you know other people who are job seeking, then why not form a group? Choose positive people and together you can boost confidence.</li>
<li><strong>Get out</strong> &#8211; Instead of sitting on the couch, get out to the job centre or employment agency. Go to the library and look in all the newspapers and magazines for jobs.</li>
<li><strong>Do enjoyable things</strong> &#8211; Take a break from job searching to do things that you love doing. Paint, learn an instrument, take the family out for a day in the countryside. Read that book you always meant to read.</li>
<li><strong>Volunteer</strong> &#8211; You can get great satisfaction from volunteer work. This could be in your local charity shop or hospital. Record youyr volunteering on your CV. It could make the vital difference in helping you get a job.</li>
