Can movies cure anxiety symptoms?

Some people believe that we live in a dark time and this has been reflected in the most popular sci fi movies and TV series that we watch. Films such as Watchmen, Lord of The Rings, and TV series like Battlestar Gallatica are all about dark times and threats from hostile forces. Even the recent Star Wars movies have been grim and not exactly a bundle of laughs.

These films reflect anxiety symptoms bought about through the collapsing financial system and terrorist threats.  These anxiety symptoms include:

  • General insecurity
  • Fear of walking the streets
  • Not spending due to financial insecurity
  • Trying to make life safe as possible

Is there a new trend in films starting that will help alleviate your anxiety symptoms and make you feel good again?

There is a new type of film appearing. This is typified by the new Star Trek movie in which the overall mood of the film is optimistic. The young James Kirk is a charismatic happy leader. Even the villains are not that bad and you think that they will learn something about themselves and emerge better people afterwards.

Chris Pine who stars in the film says:

“You’ve got apocalyptic movies like Watchmen and Dark Knight—movies that explore the darker side of human psychology—and they’re great. But this is not going to be one of those movies,” he added. “This is not nihilistic. This is not grim. This is a bright vision of the future, full of hope and optimism.”

Are there signs that a more optimistic age is dawning? The mood in the USA certainly lifted during the inauguration of Obama. But then you turn on the news and hear of another company closing, more soldiers killed in Afghanistan, the various finance ministers bemoaning the state of the economy.

No matter how you view the times that we live in, it is still possible to be a happy, positive human being. Maybe the first thing that you need to do to lift your spirits is to learn to relax and let go of your negative feelings.
