The Self Help Secrets of Dealing WIth Stress
Like many people you may have a tough and demanding job. This can lead to long-term stress that can have a negative effect on your health. Here is Sue’s story and how she found the self help secrets.
Sue was an assistant head teacher in a primary school. Everyday was busy and full of things to deal with – disruptive pupils, demanding parents, a bad-tempered head teacher. This is not why she became a teacher. She remembered her first few years as a classroom teacher – years full of optimism in which she felt that she was helping her class reach their full potential.
On the day she got the promotion to assistant head teacher, she went out with her husband to celebrate in style. The added income would really make a difference to their lifestyle. They could afford that luxury holiday they had promised themselves – perhaps get a better car.
Now the enthusiasm, the optimism, the joy had left. She found herself unable to get a full night’s sleep. She dreaded Monday mornings when she would have to start another week. She was even thinking of going to the doctors for anti-depressant pills.
Then one day she came across an article about Positive Psychology and things began to change for the better…This article on self help and positive psychology taught her ways to deal with stress at work. These included:
- Seek help. Talk to a friend, family member, co-worker, counsellor, psychologist or someone you trust
- Focus on what you have accomplished and derive a sense of satisfaction from it.
- Exercise regularly.
- Go travelling with your loved ones as it can help you return with a fresh perspective on life.
- You can choose to be happy and positive at work. For example, smile more and respond positively to new assignments.
- Focus on the job at hand.Cut the gossip and keep positive at work.
- Keep your desk free of clutter and tidy up after work.
- Avoid gossiping about others.
- Be friendly to everyone (but do not overdo it).
- Listen to some soothing music without disturbing your colleagues
- Take short breaks after continuous work; you should not do more than one hour of continuous work
- Tell your body to relax while working; it is about mind over body.
- Learn to say ‘no’ if you have far too much to do already.
- Have regular meals
- Try not to bring work home.
- Do not be overly preoccupied with promotion or competition.
- Even if your work seems boring, look for positive aspects and enjoy working.
- Give your best effort at work.
Through following these simple strategies Sue began to deal with her stress and become a more relaxed person.
