Why is Positive Psychology Different?
Although Positive Psychology can be used as a self-help system, it does differ in several ways from many self-development system. Here are some of the reasons:
- Positive Psychology developed as a branch of academic psychology
- Positive Psychology does not tell you how to lead your life but presents evidence about the benefits of various approaches to life.
- Positive Psychology does not pretend that making positive changes in your life is easy, but does claim that it is worth the effort.
- Positive Psychology is supported by research based evidence.
- Positive Psychology did not come about through the efforts of one individual, but has been created and is modified by many expert psychologists.
Positive Psychology is not the Law of Attraction or just positive thinking.
The Wikipedia entry defines Positive Psychology as:
“Positive psychology is a recent branch of psychology that “studies the strengths and virtues that enable individuals and communities to thrive”. Positive psychologists seek “to find and nurture genius and talent”, and “to make normal life more fulfilling not to cure mental illness.”
Positive Psychology is about the well-being of the individual. Well-being is not just about the lack of disease or illness or the absence of anxiety or depression. Well-being is a state of complete physical, mental and social health.
The research being undertaken by the growing number of Positive Psychologists is helping us to understand precisely the social, physical and psychological factors which allow individuals, families and societies to reach the this ‘high-level’ wellness.
This Positive Self Development site presents the findings of positive psychology in an assessable way and provides practical strategies that can be applied by you to achieve well-being or authentic happiness.

I have read several articles about self help anxiety but this post is very interesting to me compared to the other articles when i found it on Tuesday.
Hi Stephen to be honest I really learned something reading your article. Posite psychology and Psychologists who teach it certainly go above and beyond what I thought a Psychologist did. Only hope we see more of them.
