How to deal with action overwhelm
It is easy to get distracted and unfocused, especially when it comes to getting things done. You may find yourself faced with a huge list of things that you need to do. It is easy to become overwhelmed by the sheer size of your list if you have a busy home and work life.
One way of tackling this situation is to use the Getting Things Done (or GTD) system. Here is a brief introduction to GTD:
In order to cope with a large amount of things to do, you need to break your list down into manageable portions. First of all break down your list into 2 sections:
- Actions that need to be done today – call these next actions
- Actions that can be done later – call these later actions
Forget about the later actions for the time being.
Break down the next actions into context. A context can be:
- A location such as home, work ( the office) or away (that is neither at work or home)
- Actions that require equipment, such as the computer or the telephone but may not require a particular location
Then start doing actions by context. So, make all your calls on your list whether you are at home, in the office or at an airport waiting for a plane. Do all your computer work at the same time and this can be done anywhere if you have a laptop.
Instead of contemplating a large list, you focus only on those actions that need your attention right now. This avoids the feeling of being overwhelmed.
As you practice this approach you will find that yourself less stressed and more efficient.

Great tip, thanks for sharing! In addition to your post, one should learn how to prioritize; know which tasks are important to achieving his goals. Do away with tasks that only slow down the process. Sometimes people make their lives complicated that’s why they cannot move toward their goal. One way to do that is to know a person’s underlying values: what experiences are important to a person. This would help focus on the things that he needs to do.
