The Absence of Goals

I was talking to a teenage friend the other day. he had just dropped out of college because he got bad grades. I asked him what he was going to do next. He had no idea.
This reminded me of when I was in my early twenties. Since leaving school any job I applied for I got. I thought that this was just the way things are. I then lost a job because the funding for the job had ceased. Full of optimism I applied for several jobs. I did not get any of them. The problem was that I had no aim, no goal in my life. Just like my teenage friend I did not have a clear idea about what direction I wanted my life to go in. There was no one around me to point out the importance of goal making.
Most areas in your life have a structure and an outcome. If you want to bake a cake, the structure is the quantity of ingredients , the mixing, and the length of time it takes to cook. The outcome is a cake with the right flavour and texture. If you want to play golf you first learn the rules and the technique of holding and swinging the clubs, then your outcome is to get round the golf course in as little strokes as possible.
When it come to life itself, not that many people have clearly defined goals. You may have a career path and be taking care of your family, but how much of your life is actually planned? Of course there is room for spontaneity where you react to whatever appears in your life, but without structure and a clearly defined route for your life, you are in danger of wandering aimlessly through life.
Luckily, for my friend, his mother sat him down and carefully went through all the options available for him:
- Get a job
- Retake the courses to get better grades
- Take another course
- Apply for an apprenticeship
The key to making his choices were based on what he was interested in – what he could develop a passion for. He decided to take a computer course. Then there needed to be an action plan. His was simple:
- Get an application form for the course
- Fill it in and send it back to the college
- Attend the college open day to find out more about the college
If you don’t have any clear goals in your life why not spend some time thinking about some? Base your goals on what inspires you, what you are passionate about. Then do at least one action today to get you nearer achieving your goal. Make that call, write that letter, do the internet research – whatever it takes.

Goals + Being passionate about those goals is a really good combination. I mean to do what you love is always good. And yes without goals I think life just seems so much scattered, and we certainly miss the true fruit of life. When we have a good and well-thought out goal in place and we strive to achieve our goal, everything seems to fall correctly and in tune with the goal. So have a good and well-thought out goal and be passionate about what you do.
I want to be the best i can. i know somewhat about the game of golf and i need tips to be a good caddy.Tact and Tips to becoming a good golf caddy? Thanks.
Goals are good but I love direction – a place to head for, a way to go, a step forwards. Simply one at a time and as you head there continue to respond to that around and coming to you. Find direction and you find a home. Thus the joureny is as important as the destination or goal. What you say though makes sense and is timely advice for thoses in the same situation.
